Happy Birthday, America!

Big plans for your 4th of July cookies this year?

Every year I try to think of something bigger and better than the previous year. Though, some customers still like to order the same as the year before, like my antique platter cookie flag. You can see that with the video on WeCookiers:

Your Questions, My Answer

Q: How much water or vodka do I use in my airbrush colors?

A: First of all, you should avoid using water as it quickly will eat into the royal icing. Second, you shouldn’t need to use a thinner like vodka as the airbrush colors are already thinned enough for this purpose. However, the only instance to dilute the colors is if you desire a softer/lighter color than you have. If you do this, I would not add more than 1 or 2 drops in the stylus cup. Definitely test on paper towels first.

Cookie Cutter Flips

I enjoyed thinking up these flips, especially the little pig and sheep bum!

-baby bib to sheep’s bum (why didn’t I ever think of this before)

-grad tassel plaque to succulent plants

-baby cow to baby pig (just cut off the little horns)

4th of July cookie inspiration

I decided to make 2 different 4th of July cookie sets this year.

The hamburger set with fries are also perfect for Father’s Day and Memorial Day gatherings. If you haven’t done them yet, you need to. Customers love them and they are some of the easiest cookies to decorate!

Latest in Shop Gotta-havs!

I have now included an extra large silicone mat for decorating needlepoint cookies! This is a super strong, heavy-duty, and a great quality mat. It's hard to find them this size and at such a great price.

Let me know if you have any questions! Extra Lg Silicone Mat

Business Sense: marketing yourself

1. I’ve touched on this before. I’m starting up cookie parties again. After the big Covid hit, I hadn’t gotten back into it until now.

They are a lot of work, but they are so fun and pay well. This is what you need to keep in mind if you are planning on hosting them:

a. Have everything written out in a schedule. It’ll go much smoother this way.

b. Keep in your mind that you want to put on a big show. This is a party. People expect to have fun and let their hair down. Plan on providing refreshments and thank you bags with little tidbits to hand out at the end.

c. Always think how you can make it bigger and better than the last and over your competition. Continue doing this and people will be waiting in line for you next one!

2. This is your professional cookie business, not a lemonade-stand at the side of the road. Never talk your business down. Instead, be bold and confident. Like the saying, ‘Talk the talk. Walk the walk’. Always carry your business information with you and ready to hand it out.

3. If you only decorate cookies, get to know a professional cake decorator. You could both speak on each one’s behalf. You could also do like a collaboration. Get together and provide each other with coupons/discounts if the customer purchases from both of you.

Business Tips

1. Do you not have a projector yet? If not and you find your lettering less than you would like it to be, go to dafont.com, find a font you like and print it out. Place the sheet in a plastic sheet protector like I use for my royal icing transfers, and trace it with royal icing over and again until you feel you are good at it.

2. Looking for discounted supplies? I’m sure there is more than one group, but here is a Facebook group called ‘Cookie Cutters & Supplies B/S/T’ you could join. Here is the link you can copy and paste: https://www.facebook.com/groups/987086562610312/?multi_permalinks=1165606924758274%2C1164764334842533¬if_id=1718631053546458¬if_t=group_highlights&ref=notif

3. As cookiers, we are busy little beavers. Last month, I decided to get the free trial of Walmart+ delivery. Talk about a game-changer! It saves me an immense amount of time. If I run out of something I need, it’s delivered at the time I pick on the same day…free. I can keep working while it’s being handled and delivered. Why didn’t I jump on this sooner?
